Dive Tips

Plan your dive around slack tide for easier conditions — currents can be strong during tidal changes
Descend along the slope to reach the cleaning stations at 20–30m for the best chance of Mola Mola encounters
Monitor your depth and air carefully — the wall drops quickly past 40m and it is easy to go deeper than planned
Bring a surface marker buoy (SMB) and reel — this is a drift dive and you may surface far from the boat
Wear a 5mm wetsuit with a hood — thermoclines during Mola Mola season can be brutal, dropping from 27°C to 18°C within minutes
Respect the Mola Mola — approach slowly, avoid blocking their path to the cleaning station, and never chase them

Underwater Photography

Use a wide-angle lens (16–35mm or fisheye) for Mola Mola — they are large subjects and you need perspective
Set your shutter speed to 1/125s or faster to freeze the Mola Mola as they can move surprisingly fast
Bring a torch/flashlight — the thermoclines bring cold, nutrient-rich water that reduces natural light at depth
For macro subjects like nudibranchs and ghost pipefish, switch to a 60mm or 100mm macro lens
Best visibility and light conditions are in the morning before afternoon winds pick up
Stay low and still near cleaning stations — patient photographers get the closest Mola Mola encounters
